A lack of inclusive tools—not a lack of talent.

Economic data proves that companies actively employing disabled workers see up to 30% higher profit margins,1 yet the disability unemployment rate remains double the national average. While assistive tech exists in areas like eye-tracking, screen readers, and Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC), the tech industry broadly fails to develop widespread, inclusive tools, leaving a massive pool of talent untapped. Often, it falls to organizations like Project S.E.R.V.E. to engineer custom solutions. Historically, we have seen the power of such targeted tech; Stephen Hawking’s custom facial-tracking device famously enabled him to communicate and author groundbreaking physics papers. Furthermore, the "Curb Cut Effect" demonstrates that designing for accessibility builds better systems for everyone; just as the sidewalk ramps initially advocated for by disabled veterans ultimately benefited the elderly, parents with strollers, and travelers with luggage alike.
